What a credential evaluation requires of a translation
- The National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) has 17 member agencies. Universities, employers and licensing boards most often ask for an evaluation from one of them, and each member publishes its own document and translation rules.
- WES requires translations to be completed by a professional translator, exact and word for word, and it does not accept translations completed by applicants, handwritten translations or incomplete translations.
- ECE requires an English translation for every document issued in another language unless its Translation Waiver is bought, and the translation must be word for word and in the same format as the original.
- IEE asks for certified word for word English translations and does not accept uncertified or machine generated translations.
- TEC lists a certified translation among the required documents for a credential issued in another language, and its own translations come with a certification page signed by the translator.
- For a pharmacy license through NABP and the FPGEC, ECE requires an original, official, word for word English translation prepared and certified as correct by an official translator, with each page signed and dated by the translator on official stationery.
Common reasons translations get rejected
- Translating the documents yourself. WES lists translations completed by applicants among the things it cannot accept, and NABP does not allow self prepared translations at all.
- Sending a translation without the original. Every evaluator reads the translation beside the document it translates, and IEE says to keep the translation with the original language record.
- Leaving out the back of a transcript, the grading key or a stamp. A word for word rule covers everything printed on the page, and an omitted grading scale is the usual reason a transcript is sent back.
- Paying for notarization the evaluator did not ask for. The agencies want the translator's signed certification; a notary only confirms who signed, and TEC's instructions to applicants say the translation should be signed by the translator, not by a notary.
- Assuming a machine translation with a stamp will pass. IEE names machine generated translations as unacceptable, and the other evaluators verify translations against the original during the evaluation.

Good to know before you order
One translation serves every evaluator. A certified, word for word translation on letterhead with the translator's signed statement meets the shared baseline, so switching from one NACES member to another does not mean translating again.
The evaluation and the translation are two different services. NACES members evaluate; most of them do not translate, and WES says plainly that it does not provide translations. You order the translation first and send both to the evaluator.
Translate the transcript, not only the diploma. The course by course reports that universities and boards ask for are built from the transcript, and a diploma alone supports only a general equivalency statement.
Price follows the word count, not the number of sheets. One page is up to 250 words of the source document, so a diploma is usually one page and a transcript with dense grade tables runs to several.
Evaluators verify translations. WES says its evaluators verify the translations in the course of the evaluation, which is why a translation that changes a course name or a grade scale is caught rather than accepted.

Common questions
- Which credential evaluation agencies accept Eagle Translate translations?
- Any agency whose rule is a certified, word for word translation by a professional translator, which is the rule WES, ECE, TEC and IEE publish. Our certificate is signed by the translator, issued on letterhead and carries our ATA Corporate Member number, so it answers the three questions the agencies ask. No translation company can promise how a specific agency will act on a specific file, and we do not give legal advice.
- Does the translation have to be notarized for a credential evaluation?
- Not by any of the published rules on these pages. The evaluators ask for the translator's signed certification. Notarization adds a notary's confirmation of the signature, nothing about accuracy, and TEC's instructions to applicants say the translation should be signed by the translator, not by a notary. We do not currently offer notarization; if a receiver of your evaluation insists on it, email us before ordering and we will tell you honestly whether we can help.
- Do I need to translate the transcript as well as the diploma?
- Almost always. A general evaluation can be built from the diploma, but the course by course report that universities, nursing boards and CPA boards ask for is built from the transcript, and the evaluator needs every course, grade and the grading scale in English.
- Can I translate my own documents to save money?
- For most evaluators, no. WES lists translations completed by applicants among the things it cannot accept, and NABP does not allow self prepared translations. ECE is the exception and accepts a self prepared word for word translation for most report types, but not for pharmacy applications. A translation error is ours to fix
If your certified translation is rejected because of a translation error we made, we correct it at no charge, and if the corrected translation is rejected again for that same error we refund what you paid for it.
