The Evaluation Company (TEC), known until recently as SpanTran, evaluates foreign degrees for US universities, employers and licensing boards and lists a certified translation among the documents it requires for any credential issued in another language. Its instructions to applicants allow a translation from another professional translator on three conditions. The translator is a member of the American Translators Association or a certified foreign translator, the translation is issued on the translator's professional letterhead, and it is certified and signed by the translator rather than by a notary. As an alternative, you can choose to translate your documents with another professional translator. They should be a member of the American Translators Association or a certified foreign translator. What a TEC evaluation requires of your documents
- TEC's document requirements tool lists a certified translation as a required document for credentials issued in a language other than English, for both its General Analysis and its Course Analysis reports.
- TEC's General Analysis is a document by document report that states the US equivalency of each credential; its Course Analysis adds individual courses, credits and grades from the transcript and calculates a US grade point average.
- A Course Analysis needs the transcript translated in full, every course and grade with the grading scale, because the US grade point average is calculated from it.
- TEC's own translations carry a certification page signed by the translator, and the company is a member of the American Translators Association; an outside translation is held to the same standard.
- TEC has been a NACES member since 1996, so a TEC report satisfies a school or board that asks for an evaluation from a NACES member.
Common reasons translations get rejected
- A notarized translation without the translator's own signed certification. TEC's instructions ask for the translator's signature, not a notary's, and a notary stamp does not replace the certification statement.
- A translation with no letterhead and no way to identify the translator. TEC asks for the translator's professional letterhead so the evaluator can see who stands behind the work.
- Translating the diploma only and ordering a Course Analysis. The course report is built from the transcript, and TEC will ask for it before the evaluation moves.
- Skipping the back of a transcript or a stamped annotation. A certified translation covers everything printed on the page, and an omitted grading key is the usual reason a transcript goes back to the applicant.

TEC was established in 1982, was known as SpanTran until its rename, and has been a NACES member since 1996.
TEC sells its own certified translations, and its instructions offer an outside professional translator as an alternative. You are free to translate with us and evaluate with TEC.
TEC's translations can be notarized on request, which shows that notarization is an optional extra in TEC's own practice rather than a requirement of the evaluation.
Spanish language documents are TEC's historical specialty, which is where the SpanTran name came from. Spanish to English is also the pair we translate most.

- Does Eagle Translate meet TEC's translation requirements?
- Yes, on all three points TEC lists. Eagle Translate is a Corporate Member of the American Translators Association (member 199762), every translation is issued on our letterhead, and the certificate is signed by the translator who certified the document, not by a notary. Applicants have used our certified translations for TEC evaluations.
- TEC asks for a member of the ATA. Is a corporate membership enough?
- Our membership is a corporate membership held by Eagle Translate, the company that issues the certificate, and the member number is printed on it. TEC itself describes its membership the same way, as a company that is a member of the ATA. If TEC ever asks you for more, send us their message and we will answer it directly.
- Is SpanTran the same as TEC?
- Yes. The Evaluation Company was known as SpanTran, was established in 1982, and has been a NACES member since 1996. A request for a SpanTran evaluation is a request for a TEC evaluation.
- Do I need a notarized translation for TEC?
- No. TEC's instructions say the translation should be signed by the translator, not by a notary. Our certificate is signed by the translator. We do not currently offer notarization; if another receiver insists on it, email us before ordering and we will tell you honestly whether we can help.
- Which documents should I translate for a TEC Course Analysis?
- The diploma or degree certificate and the complete transcript, including the grading scale and any reverse side. The Course Analysis lists every course, credit and grade and calculates a US grade point average, so the transcript has to be complete.
- How much does the translation for a TEC evaluation cost?
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 source words, no separate certification fee. A diploma is usually one page and a university transcript two to six. - Yes. Every certificate carries a number and a QR code that lead to eagletranslate.com/verify, where the number is confirmed against our records.
A translation error is ours to fix
If your certified translation is rejected because of a translation error we made, we correct it at no charge, and if the corrected translation is rejected again for that same error we refund what you paid for it. Our Refund Policy sets out the conditions and what it does not cover. Your documents are encrypted and kept confidential from start to finish.
