World Education Services (WES) is the evaluator most US universities and employers name first, and it does not translate. WES requires that any document issued in another language be translated exactly and word for word by a professional translator, who may be affiliated with a university, a certified translation agency or any other professional translation service, and it cannot accept translations completed by applicants, handwritten translations or incomplete translations. What a WES evaluation requires of your documents
- Translations for a WES evaluation in the United States must be completed by a professional translator, who may be affiliated with a university, a certified translation agency or any other professional translation service.
- The translation must be exact and word for word, with all text in the original language accurately translated into English or French.
- WES cannot accept handwritten translations, translations of photocopies, translations completed by applicants, incomplete translations, or original translations.
- WES does not provide translations. It requires official word for word translations of documents in other languages, and its evaluators verify them during the evaluation.
- Whether a given document needs a translation is shown in the required documents list inside the applicant's WES account, which depends on the country and the credential.
Common reasons translations get rejected
- Translating the documents yourself. WES lists translations completed by applicants among the things it cannot accept, however good the English.
- Sending an English version issued by your school instead of a translation. WES requires an independently translated version of the original language document, not an English printout in its place.
- A translation that summarizes or leaves out a section. WES asks for exact and word for word, and an incomplete translation is on its list of what it cannot accept.
- Translating from a photocopy that cut off a seal or a margin note. WES does not accept translations of photocopies, and a missing seal is one of the first things an evaluator notices.
- Paying for a notarized translation WES did not ask for. WES's published rules name the translator and the word for word standard, not a notary.

WES accepts English or French, because the same organization evaluates for Canada. For a US evaluation, translate into English.
WES verifies translations as part of the evaluation, so the translation and the original are read together. Our translation keeps the layout of the original for exactly that reading.
Many WES evaluations require the school to send the transcript directly to WES. The translation is your part; ask us for the translation of the copy you hold, and send it with your application.
A WES course by course report is built from the transcript, so the transcript has to be translated in full, grading scale included.

- Does WES accept translations from Eagle Translate?
- WES accepts translations completed by a professional translator affiliated with a certified translation agency or any other professional translation service, and Eagle Translate is one, a translation company and an ATA Corporate Member whose translator signs each certificate. We translate exactly and word for word, which is the standard WES publishes. WES decides each file on its own; we do not give legal advice and no company can promise an outcome.
- Does WES translate documents?
- No. WES says it does not provide language translations and that applicants are responsible for providing any translations needed. You order the translation first and submit it with your original documents.
- Can I translate my own transcript for WES?
- No. Translations completed by applicants are on WES's list of what it cannot accept, together with handwritten and incomplete translations.
- Does WES need a notarized translation?
- WES's published rules ask for a professional translator and a word for word translation; they do not mention notarization. Our certificate is signed by the translator. We do not currently offer notarization; if another receiver insists on it, email us before ordering and we will tell you honestly whether we can help.
- My university gave me an English transcript. Do I still need a translation?
- If the record was issued in another language, yes. WES cannot accept an English language version of the document in place of a translation and requires an independently translated version of the original. Send the original language record and our translation of it.
- Which documents does a WES evaluation need translated?
- The list depends on your country and credential and appears in your WES account. In practice it is the degree certificate and the complete transcript, and for a course by course report the transcript is essential.
- How much does the translation for WES cost and how long does it take?

A translation error is ours to fix
If your certified translation is rejected because of a translation error we made, we correct it at no charge, and if the corrected translation is rejected again for that same error we refund what you paid for it. Our Refund Policy sets out the conditions and what it does not cover. Your documents are encrypted and kept confidential from start to finish.
