The basics

Certified translation basics

What certification means, who signs it, and when you need it.

A certified translation is a complete, word for word translation of a document accompanied by a signed certificate of accuracy. The certificate attests that the translation is complete and accurate and includes the translator name, signature, date, and language pair. Government agencies, courts, and universities require it for foreign language documents.

A certified translation includes the translator's signed statement of accuracy. A notarized translation adds a notary public who confirms the identity of the person signing that statement. The notary does not review the translation itself. Most offices, including USCIS, require certified translation, and notarization is only needed when the receiving office specifically asks for it.

Any translator competent in both languages can sign a certification, but reviewing offices expect it to come from an independent professional. Eagle Translate certifications are signed by qualified, certified human translators and are backed by an ATA credential.

We advise against it. Reviewing officers expect a certification from an independent translator, and self translated documents are commonly questioned or rejected. An independent certified translation avoids that risk from the start.

No. A certified translation does not expire. As long as the original document has not changed, the certified translation remains valid. If a receiving office asks for a recent translation, check its requirements before reusing an old one.

The translator name and signature, the date, the language pair, and a statement that the translation is complete and accurate. It is issued on the official Eagle Translate template with our seal.

The certified translator responsible for your document signs the certificate. It carries the translator name, signature, date, and the language pair of the translation.
