Certified translation of engineering credentials for the FE and PE exams and state licensure
An engineer or surveyor with a degree from outside the United States usually reaches the FE or PE exam and a state license through an NCEES Credentials Evaluation, the service most member boards use, and NCEES applies one translation rule to every document in the file. Official documents in the native language must be accompanied by literal English translations completed by a certified translation service; the transcript must arrive at NCEES from the institution directly, with a translation from a certified translation company when it is not in English; the diploma is submitted in both versions; and course descriptions, which NCEES keeps only in translation, are sent by the university to you for translation by a certified translator. What a foreign educated engineer's file requires
- All official documents in the native language must be accompanied by literal English translations completed by a certified translation service.
- The original language transcript must arrive at NCEES directly from the institution; copies are not acceptable, and a translation from a certified translation company is required when it is not in English.
- The diploma or certificate of graduation is submitted in both the native language and the translated version.
- Course descriptions are sent by the university to the applicant for translation by a certified translator; NCEES keeps only the certified translated course descriptions.
- NCEES Credentials Evaluations is designed for candidates who earned their degrees outside the United States and are pursuing licensure through an NCEES member licensing board; the board, not NCEES, grants the license.
Common reasons translations get rejected
- Translating the transcript yourself. NCEES names a certified translation service or company on every document page it publishes.
- Summarizing the course descriptions. NCEES wants literal translations, and a shortened description can move a course out of the engineering column.
- Sending a translation of a student copy of the transcript and nothing from the school. The original has to come from the institution.
- Translating the transcript twice, once for NCEES and once for the visa. One certified translation with the translator's signed statement serves NCEES, the board and USCIS.

If your certified translation is rejected because of a translation error we made, we correct it at no charge, and if the corrected translation is rejected again for that same error we refund what you paid for it.
