A certified translation is a complete, word for word translation of a document accompanied by a signed certificate of accuracy. The certificate attests that the translation is complete and accurate and includes the translator name, signature, date, and language pair. Government agencies, courts, and universities require it for foreign language documents.

A certified translation includes the translator's signed statement of accuracy. A notarized translation adds a notary public who confirms the identity of the person signing that statement. The notary does not review the translation itself. Most offices, including USCIS, require certified translation, and notarization is only needed when the receiving office specifically asks for it.
