Certified translation of accounting credentials for the CPA exam and state licensure

A CPA candidate educated outside the United States has to show a state board of accountancy that the foreign degree and coursework meet the education requirement, and most boards take that showing from an evaluation report. NASBA's own service, NASBA International Evaluation Services, evaluates only for the CPA profession and publishes a translation standard that is short and exact. Certified English translations of transcripts, certificates and diplomas must come from a member of the American Translators Association, your university or the ministry of education, must be verbatim and in the original format with no interpretation or evaluation, typed, signed and dated by the translator, with the translator's contact information, and translations from private providers outside the United States are not accepted. Eagle Translate is a US company and an ATA Corporate Member, and every translation is verbatim, in the layout of the original, typed and certified with the translator's signature, date and our contact details. Certified translation is $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, in 2 to 3 business days, and STUDENT25 takes 25% off.

Requirements

What a foreign educated CPA candidate's file requires

  • If the official transcript or diploma is not in English, it must be translated before NIES can process the application, and the original or official transcripts issued directly by the university are required as well.
  • NASBA's standard for translations is an ATA member, the university or the ministry of education; verbatim; the same format as the original; no interpretation or evaluation; typed, signed and dated; the translator's contact information; and no private providers outside the United States.
  • NIES sells its own translations per page by language, with an additional payment possible when a page carries significantly more than 250 words, and its FAQ says it translates and charges for every page it receives.
  • NASBA International Evaluation Services evaluates only for the CPA profession; state boards decide which evaluation services they accept.

Common reasons translations get rejected

  • A sworn translation from a private translator in your home country. NASBA's list says translations from private providers outside the United States will not be accepted.
  • A translation that converts grades or credits. NASBA wants verbatim text with no evaluation, and a converted grade can cost you a course NIES would otherwise count.
  • Ordering the evaluation before checking which service your state board accepts. NIES is NASBA's own service, and boards publish their own lists.
  • Translating the diploma but not the transcript. The transcript is the document that carries the accounting and business credit hours the board counts.

Who relies on it

Where a CPA candidate's certified translation goes

  • To NASBA International Evaluation Services, or to the evaluation service the state board of accountancy names, with the official transcripts from the university.
  • To the employer and to USCIS when the same accounting degree supports an H-1B petition or an employment based green card.

An accounting transcript of four to eight pages is typically $99.80 to $199.60 certified before STUDENT25 takes 25% off; the diploma is usually one more page.

Questions

Common questions

Does NASBA accept translations from Eagle Translate?
NASBA's rule names any member of the American Translators Association, and Eagle Translate holds ATA corporate membership, printed on the certificate with the member number and the translator's name. Our translations are verbatim, in the original format, typed, signed and dated, with our address, phone and email; NASBA's list also mentions a fax number, which we do not have. NIES decides each file; we do not give legal advice.
My state board accepts other evaluators. Does the translation change?
Only the receiver changes. WES, ECE and the other NACES members publish their own translation rules, quoted on our agency pages, and a certified word for word translation from an ATA member company answers each of them.
Does NASBA need a notarized translation?
Its published standards do not mention notarization. We do not currently offer it.
How much does the translation cost and how long does it take?
$24.95 per page of up to 250 source words, in 2 to 3 business days, no certification fee. STUDENT25 takes 25% off; FREERUSH gives Premium 1 to 2 business day delivery at the Certified price. One code per order.
Can NIES or the board verify the certificate?
Yes. Each certificate carries its own number and a QR code that lead to eagletranslate.com/verify, where the number is confirmed against our records.
