Translation requirements for an FCCPT physical therapy credentials review
The Foreign Credentialing Commission on Physical Therapy (FCCPT) evaluates the credentials of foreign educated physical therapists and physical therapist assistants and is authorized by USCIS to issue Health Care Worker Certificates. Its translation process is unlike any evaluation agency's. Documents must first reach FCCPT from the school or licensing authority; if they arrive in the native language, FCCPT emails them to you so you can arrange a translation by a professional translator, and the translator must send the translation directly to FCCPT together with the original language copy and a notarized statement as to the translator's certification. A document you had translated before the school sent it is not accepted as official. If a school or licensing authority will not submit documents in English, or if documents arrive in the native language, FCCPT will send the documents to you (the applicant) electronically, using the e-mail address on file, so that you can arrange for translations by a professional translator.The order of events matters. The school sends first, FCCPT forwards, then you arrange the translation of what FCCPT sent.

What FCCPT requires of a translation
- Documents must reach FCCPT from the school or licensing authority first; if they arrive in the native language, FCCPT emails them to the applicant to arrange a translation by a professional translator.
- A document translated before the school or licensing authority sent it is not accepted as official.
- The translated copies must be sent directly to FCCPT by the professional translator, with the original language copy and a notarized statement as to the translator's certification.
- The translation does not have to be done in the United States, but it must be done by a professional translator; FCCPT names the American Translators Association website as one place to find one.
- For the New York Credentials Verification service FCCPT does not send documents to the applicant for translation; if NYSED requires a translation, NYSED contacts the applicant directly.
Common reasons translations get rejected
- Translating your diploma before the school has sent it to FCCPT. FCCPT says the document will not be accepted as official.
- Uploading the translation yourself. FCCPT wants it from the translator directly.
- Assuming a certified translation is enough for FCCPT. Its page asks for a notarized statement about the translator's certification, which is a separate step.
- Waiting for FCCPT to forward documents in a New York file. For the New York service FCCPT does not forward them; NYSED contacts you if it needs a translation.

- FCCPT asks for a professional translator, which we are, and also for the translation to be sent directly by the translator with the original and a notarized statement about the translator's certification. We do not currently offer notarization, and our standard delivery goes to you. Email us before ordering for FCCPT and we will tell you honestly whether we can meet all three conditions for your file. We do not give legal advice.
- Can I translate my documents before FCCPT asks?
- Not for FCCPT. Its page says a document translated before the school or licensing authority sent it will not be accepted as official. Wait for FCCPT to email you the native language documents, then arrange the translation of those.
- Does the translation have to be made in the United States?
- No. FCCPT says the documents do not need to be translated in the United States, only by a professional translator.
- What about the state board and the visa?
- State boards and USCIS ask for certified translations of the same diploma, transcript and license; USCIS's rule is a full translation with the translator's signed certification of completeness, accuracy and competence. If your certified translation is rejected because of a translation error we made, we correct it at no charge, and if the corrected translation is rejected again for that same error we refund what you paid for it.
