What reviewers require for a certified diploma translation
- USCIS requires a full English translation of the entire diploma, which the translator certifies as complete and accurate, together with the translator's certification that he or she is competent to translate from the foreign language into English (8 CFR 103.2(b)(3)).
- The degree title must be rendered literally in English, not converted into a claimed US equivalent; equivalency determination is the role of a credential evaluator, and a translation that asserts an equivalent degree can conflict with the evaluation.
- The holder's name and all dates must be copied exactly as they appear on the diploma, with name transliteration kept consistent with the passport spelling used elsewhere in the same filing.
- Portions of the diploma that cannot be read (worn seals, faded ink) are marked as illegible in the translation rather than guessed; this is standard professional practice for certified translations.
Common reasons translations get rejected
- The translation is submitted without the translator's signed certification of completeness, accuracy, and competence, which fails the 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3) requirement and is a common trigger for a USCIS Request for Evidence.
- Only the main text is translated while seals, stamps, Latin phrases, or the reverse side are omitted, so the translation is not complete and can be rejected as a partial or summary translation.
- The translator converts the degree title into a US equivalent (for example rendering a foreign first degree as a specific US degree), which conflicts with the credential evaluator's findings and undermines the file.
- The name spelling on the translation does not match the passport or the petition, creating an identity inconsistency across the filing.
- An English-language diploma version issued by the school is submitted to WES in place of an independent translation; WES states it cannot accept English versions of documents in place of a translation.
