Italian to English Certified Translation

An Italian to English certified translation is a complete English version of your Italian document, produced by an ATA certified translator and issued with a signed certificate of accuracy from that translator. What a certified Italian to English translation has to contain

A comune certificate is short, but almost none of it is plain prose. The value sits in the stamps, the protocol number, the revenue stamp, the officer title and the marginal annotations, and every one of those has to appear in English. Seals and signatures are described inside square brackets, so the reader sees [round stamp of the Comune di Palermo, Ufficio dello Stato Civile] instead of an unexplained gap. Faded or handwritten passages that cannot be read are marked illegible rather than filled in from guesswork.

The English page keeps the shape of the Italian one so the two can be compared field by field. The certificate of accuracy attached to it names the language pair and the documents covered, states that the translation is complete and accurate, and is issued under the company ATA certificate with a reference the recipient can confirm at our verification page.

Estratto, certificato and copia integrale are three different documents

This is the single most common reason an Italian file gets sent back, and it has nothing to do with translation quality. A certificato states a fact. An estratto per riassunto is a summary extract of the register entry. A copia integrale is a photographic or transcribed copy of the whole entry including every marginal note.

If a US agency asks for a long form birth certificate, an estratto per riassunto may not carry enough. The translation always states on its face which form was translated, using the Italian term with the English explanation beside it, so nobody has to guess. Check what the recipient asked for before you order, because their instructions govern and no translation can add information the Italian original does not contain.

Marginal annotations decide whether the record is current

Italian civil status is recorded by adding annotazioni a margine to the original birth entry. A marriage, a divorce, an adoption, a change of name, the acquisition of citizenship and the death itself are all written in the margin of the birth act, sometimes decades apart and often by different hands.

Those notes are frequently the whole reason the document was requested, so they are translated in full with their dates and their register references, not summarised as a note about a later event. If your Italian original has cramped handwriting down the side of the page, make sure the scan captures it before you upload.

Marca da bollo, protocol numbers and exemption clauses

Italian certificates carry a marca da bollo, the revenue stamp, with its own serial number and value, unless the certificate states an exemption and cites the law that grants it. Both cases are translated, the stamp with its number and the exemption with its citation, because a receiving office in the United States has no way to tell otherwise whether a page is missing something.

Modern extracts issued on the international multilingual form under the Vienna Convention of 1976 already print their field headings in several languages. That is not a translation of your document. The entries themselves, the marginal notes, the stamps and the officer's remarks are still in Italian, which is why a full English translation is still required.

Italian degrees, 110 e lode and exam marks out of 30

Italian academic records use scales that mean nothing to a US reader without help. University exams are marked out of 30, with 18 as the pass and 30 e lode as the top result. A degree is awarded with a voto di laurea out of 110, again with lode above the maximum. The school leaving esame di Stato is scored out of 100. Credits are counted in CFU, with 60 CFU representing a full academic year, aligned with ECTS.

A certified translation reproduces every one of those numbers as printed and translates the legend that explains the scale. It does not convert them into letter grades or a grade point average. That conversion is credential evaluation and is done by an evaluator, who will usually want the certified translation in hand first.

Apostilles from the Prefettura or the Procura

Italy is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention. Administrative and civil status documents are apostilled by the Prefettura, the territorial office of the government, while judicial and notarial documents, including casellario certificates, are apostilled by the Procura della Repubblica. Either way the apostille is a separate page written in Italian, and US recipients usually want it translated with everything else.

Put the apostille in the same PDF as the document. It counts toward your page total and costs far less to include now than to order separately later.

Names in Italian registry order

Italian registers often print the surname before the given name, and women appear under their birth surname throughout their life, with a married name shown separately where the record allows it. Parentage is given as figlio di or figlia di with both parents named. All of that is reproduced exactly as printed, including accented characters and any second given name, because a caseworker is matching those strings against a passport.

A page is up to 250 words of real text, not a sheet of paper, so a one sided estratto is normally a single page even on a large sheet. If a translation is rejected because of a translation error we made, we correct it at no charge. If the corrected translation is rejected again for that same error, we refund what was paid for it, provided you tell us within 30 days and send the written rejection.
