Apostilles and notarization in Missouri
The Missouri Secretary of State issues apostilles and authentications for Missouri documents. Certificates are issued at Jefferson City and signed by the Secretary of State.
The fee is 10 dollars per apostille or authentication. The office accepts checks and money orders payable to the Secretary of State's Office as well as MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and Discover.
Missouri's apostille certificate states that it certifies only the authenticity of the signature, the capacity of the signer, and the identity of the seal or stamp. It does not certify the content of the document, and it is not valid for use inside the United States.
Private documents such as translator certifications must first be notarized by a Missouri notary public, while public records such as birth certificates must be certified copies issued by the official record keeper, before the Secretary of State will attach an apostille.
USCIS does not require notarized translations from Missouri filers. Federal rules require a certified translation, in which the translator certifies competence in both languages and the accuracy of the English translation. A qualified professional translator's signed certification meets this standard without a notary.
When a Missouri notary notarizes a translator's certification, the notary is verifying the translator's signature, not the accuracy of the translation itself.
If a translated document will be used overseas, the translator's certification can be notarized by a Missouri notary and the notarized document can then receive a Missouri Secretary of State apostille for 10 dollars.

- How is terminology from another country's legal system handled?
- A term with no exact United States equivalent is rendered to carry the meaning it has in the system that issued it, rather than swapped for an American term that would change what the document says. Where a term needs explaining, the explanation sits in brackets beside it instead of replacing it.
- A document has been asked for at short notice. How quickly can it be done?
- Certified delivery is 2 to 3 business days. Through 31 December 2026 the upgrade to Premium 1 to 2 business days delivery is applied automatically at the Certified price, so the faster option costs the same as the standard one.
- What does the certificate attest to?
- It attests to the accuracy of the translation. It states in those words that it does not attest to the authenticity of the source document or to the truth of its contents. That boundary is what makes it a certification a reviewer can rely on rather than a claim about your evidence.
