Requirements
What a certified translation must include
- A complete, word for word English translation of the entire document, including seals, stamps, signatures, and marginal notes.
- A signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy stating that the translation is complete and accurate and that the translator is competent to translate.
- The certificate carries the printed name and signature of the qualified professional translator, the language pair, the date, and the order reference.
- A QR code on the certificate opens a public verification record for the order.

How Portuguese-language documents work
Brazil, Portugal, Cape Verde (Cabo Verde), and São Tomé and Príncipe are contracting parties to the Hague Apostille Convention. Entry into force dates: Portugal February 4, 1969; São Tomé and Príncipe September 13, 2008; Cabo Verde February 13, 2010; Brazil August 14, 2016.
Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, and Timor-Leste are not parties to the Hague Apostille Convention, so their public documents are authenticated for US use through consular legalization rather than an apostille.
In Brazil, births, marriages, and deaths are registered at Cartórios de Registro Civil das Pessoas Naturais, privately operated registry offices delegated by the state and supervised by the Conselho Nacional de Justiça (CNJ).
Since January 1, 2010, Brazilian birth, marriage, and death certificates are issued on CNJ-standardized national models carrying a 32-digit matrícula that encodes the issuing cartório, book, page, and entry number. The models have been updated since, most recently by CNJ Provimento 182/2024.
