Apostilles and notarization in Utah
Apostilles for Utah documents are issued by the Office of the Utah Lieutenant Governor (350 N State Street, Suite 220, Salt Lake City), which runs a dedicated authentications service at authentications.utah.gov.
Effective July 1, 2025, the fee is $19.00 per apostille or certificate of authentication with 3 to 5 business day processing. Next business day processing costs an additional $34.00 and same day processing an additional $74.00. Adoption documents with a sworn affidavit are $10.00.
As of July 8, 2026, Utah issues a single universal certificate format that replaced the previous separate apostille and certificate of authentication formats, and as of July 9, 2026 the office offers digital delivery of authentications, with online verification available at verifyapostille.utah.gov.
Original public documents certified by the legal custodian, such as vital records from the Office of Vital Records, do not need notarization before apostille. Private documents must be properly notarized by a Utah notary. The office cannot authenticate out-of-state documents, out-of-state notarizations, or documents notarized by a remote notary.
The Lieutenant Governor's office does not translate documents and does not require documents to be translated into English before it will process an authentication.
For immigration filings from Utah, USCIS requires a certified translation, not a notarized one. Federal rules ask for the translator's signed certification of accuracy and competence, so a Utah notary stamp is not needed for a USCIS submission handled through the Salt Lake City Field Office.
If a translation will be apostilled in Utah as a private document, the translator's signed statement must be notarized by a Utah-commissioned notary. Utah's authentications office rejects documents notarized by remote notaries and documents notarized outside Utah.
A notarized document submitted for a Utah apostille must be the original with original signatures and a complete, compliant notarial certificate. Utah has more than 20,000 commissioned notaries public, searchable through the state notary search.
